When reading about nutrition, certain terms come up frequently, but what do the actually mean? This post will be split into 2 parts and will be mentioning 6 very common terms used in diets and nutrition.

The first 3 terms are: Calories, Carbohydrates and Fats.

Calories

The units used to measure energy obtained in foods. The body requires a certain number of calories to function normally and calorie intake should be regulated to maintain a healthy weight. The amount of calories/ energy you need depends on your daily activity and it varies from 1 person to another. It is important to make sure you are eating enough calories to sustain your and give you enough energy for your daily activity. Having said so calories are not everything and as long as you are eating clean and fresh food, calories should not be an issue, just make sure you are eating a well balanced diet.

Carbohydrates

These can be split into 2 categories:

  • Simple Carbohydrates (sugars) which enter the bloodstream quickly and have limited nutritional value
  • Complex Carbohydrates (starches) which reach the blood at a slower rate and contain more fibre, vitamins and minerals

Fats

These also can split into 2 categories:

  • Saturated Fats – which are mostly animal fats and should be eaten sparingly
  • Unsaturated Fats – usually derived from vegetables and are healthier than saturated fat
