Herbs for Hay Fever part 2
Several Herbs have anti-inflammatory and astringent properties, acting as natural antihistamines to relieve the symptoms of hay fever
Plantain – The juice or tincture prepared from the leaves of lantern provides valuable hay fever relief. The leaves are rich in anti inflammatory iridoids and flavanoids. The plant’s natural astringency also acts to tone and dry the mucus membranes
Devil’s Claw – A native plant of southern Africa, this herb gets its name from the wood like branches of barbed fruit. It is the root tubers of the plant that are valued for medicinal use, however, as these have anti-inflammatory and immune boosting properties, this gives the herb a useful role in the treatment of hay fever
Garlic – As well as helping to boost your immune system, garlic is a natural fungicide (fungus spree can trigger a hay fever attack). It also has antihistamine properties, which make it useful in helping to reduce the irritating symptoms of hay fever such as a runny nose and itchy sore eyes. Garlic is a versatile plant that can be eaten both cooked and raw
Chamomile herbal eye compress
One of the most discomforting symptoms of hay fever is red, itchy and sore eyes. Before reaching for those eye drops, however, you might want to try a natural herbal compress for relief.
Ancient Wisdom – In ancient times, herbalists noticed how the appearance of some plants looked similar to parts of the human body and applied this observation as a foundation for some treatments. The tiny, eye-like flowers of chamomile, therefore, were recommended for herbal eye baths
Soothing the eyes – The herb’s anti-inflammatory properties and cooling effect can soothe swollen, red eyes caused by hay fever when applied as an eye compress
How to make the compress:
- Make a weak chamomile tea and allow to cool.
- Soak a wad of cotton wool or a piece of clean cloth un the herbal solution and gently apply to the eye
- Apply a fresh compress to each eye to avoid infection
